Not only is adopting a pet from Vieques Humane Society a way to truly make a difference in the world ... it's also quick, easy, inexpensive, and you don't even need to be in Vieques to make it happen!

If you are interested in an animal give us a call or email us. We would like to get to know you a little. We want to make sure our animals are going to the right homes and we bet you want to know that it is a great match as well. When you mail in the application , please send us a letter of recommendation from your vet.
If you decide to adopt from us then we need to ship your new pet to you and this is how we do it:
If we can find people on Vieques that are flying back up to the states we often times send animals along with them. If not, we prefer to ship with Continental. If the animal is 20lbs or less they can go in a soft carrier and go in the cabin with the traveler. If they are over 20lbs they have to go under in the designated cargo hold for animals. (Don't worry, it is temperature regulated between 50F-70F). When shipping with Contintental, they do not need to travel with a person.The difference is the expense, but if you want your animal right away, this is the best option.
If Continental is your choice, call their Live Animal Desk, (1 800 575-3335) and make a flight reservation. We try our best to find a volunteer to get the animal to San Juan for you (at your cost). Please understand that this takes alot of coordination and that times of travel are very important, so let us know what your plans are before making reservations.
You are wondering what the cost looks like to adopt? Here is the break down:
-Adoption fee: (covers spay/neuter, all vaccines, deworming medicine, health certificate, rabies certificate, and any medications needed) $100 for dogs and $75 for cats.
-Transport to Airport: We have to get the animal to the main island by ferry and then we have to have the animal transported 1 ½ hour drive to airport and this costs $62. If you are taking the a dog or cat with you on the plane from Vieques and the animal weighs less than 20lbs, it will be an extra $10 charge.
-Airline Fee: This depends on what airlines and if the animal is being brought home with somebody or just being shipped. Example, American Airlines charges $100 for carrying an animal in the cabin and $250 plus tax (about $260) for cargo. Continental (http://cargo.cocargo.com/cargo/files/pdfs/rates/petsafe.pdf) cargo starts at $199 plus tax (about $225) and increases with the weight of the dog.
